What is a premium cigar?

From Seed to Smoke

There is a big difference between smoking a cigar and understanding a cigar.

A premium cigar is not simply something you light. It is an agricultural product, a craft, and a ritual, all rolled into one.

At CRS Tobacco Group, we believe that the best way to enjoy cigars is to first understand what makes them truly premium.

Let’s start at the beginning.

A Premium Cigar Is Handmade, always

The most important distinction is this:

A premium cigar is handmade.

Not partially. Not assisted by machines. Completely handmade by skilled rollers, often after years (sometimes decades) of experience.

This human touch matters because:

  • Each cigar is individually inspected

  • The draw is adjusted by feel, not by automation

  • Balance is achieved through knowledge, not formulas

No machine can replace the sensitivity of trained hands working with fermented tobacco.

It Starts in the Soil: Tobacco as Agriculture

Premium cigars begin long before they are rolled.

They begin in the soil.

Tobacco is deeply influenced by:

  • Climate

  • Altitude

  • Soil composition

  • Humidity

This is what we call terroir; the same concept used in wine and coffee.

In Honduras, rich soils and ideal growing conditions allow tobacco to develop depth, aroma, and complexity. A premium cigar carries that origin within it, even before it is lit.

Fermentation: Where Flavor Is Born

Raw tobacco is harsh, bitter, and unbalanced. It becomes smokeable only after natural fermentation.

During fermentation:

  • Ammonia is released

  • Sugars develop

  • Aromas become rounder and smoother

This process can take months or even years, depending on the tobacco and the vision of the blender.

Premium cigars are never rushed. Time is an ingredient.

The Anatomy of a Premium Cigar

Every premium cigar is made of three main components:

  1. Wrapper

The outer leaf. It influences aroma, appearance, and part of the flavor experience.

  1. Binder

The structural leaf that holds everything together.

  1. Filler

A blend of different tobacco leaves that creates complexity, strength, and balance.

A premium cigar is not about one leaf; it is about how all three work together.

Flavor vs Strength: A common misunderstanding

One of the biggest myths in cigars is this: “Strong cigars have more flavor.”

Not true.

Flavor refers to taste, aroma, and complexity. Strength refers to nicotine impact.

A premium cigar can be:

  • Full-flavored and mild

  • Strong but simple

  • Or balanced and elegant

Understanding this difference is key to enjoying cigars without intimidation.

Time is part of the experience

Premium cigars are meant to be smoked slowly.

They are designed for:

  • Reflection

  • Conversation

  • Silence

  • Ritual

If you rush a premium cigar, you miss its purpose.

A good cigar is not consumed, it is experienced.

More than Smoke

A premium cigar represents:

  • Agriculture

  • Craft

  • Culture

  • Memory

From seed to smoke, every step matters.

Once you understand this, you never smoke the same way again.

Smoking a premium cigar is not about status. It is about awareness.

And awareness always begins with understanding.
